Why did you choose to work at DISCO Hi-Tec America, Inc.?

To be honest, I had not heard of DISCO before I applied. It was the middle of the pandemic, I had just graduated, and was worried I would be unable to find a job. The customer engineer role wasn't even completely in my immediate wheelhouse: I graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree, but this job has more focus in Mechanical Engineering. However, I also have a background from my first degree in sociology. During my interview process, the management team explained DISCO's unique cultural activities such as MBO, PIM, Disco Values, etc. I was immediately intrigued by these activities. I requested a follow up to learn more about all of these in depth. In this follow up interview, I truly fell in love with how DISCO approaches its place as an industry within society. It's a very self-aware company, with both lofty goals as well as a self-reflection that keeps its work grounded in the needs of the wider world. Within my first week at the company, I could already tell this is the kind of place I could find myself staying at until retirement.

What aspect of your current work is challenging, yet brings you fulfillment?

There are many elements, but I think what can be most shocking to many is the "go for it" attitude the company has. I think many companies have this same kind of buzz word; but what makes DISCO different is how the organization is structured. Through PIM, DISCO encourages all employees to think more deeply about how to make their jobs easier, faster, and more efficient. But unlike more traditional companies, no one in DISCO is going to tell you "to do it or not to do it." If you have an idea, you are given full leeway to pursue it. But it is entirely up to you to implement your ideas, and you are rewarded if the idea is good. I often would approach someone I viewed as a "superior" and would suggest that we should do something differently. Their response would always be "so do it." You don't need permission. It is up to you to take your ideas and bring them to fruition, whether it’s something small like building a jig to make troubleshooting easier, or some grand vision on restructuring the operations of your office. Unlike at other companies, DISCO is truly a place where you have influence on the company you work in, and it is up to you whether you bring these ideas to life.

What is "work" to you?

Work can mean many things inside DISCO. This is part of the agreement where you can forge your own path. Some of my work is hands-on tool time, helping customers solve problems that have brought their machine down. Some of my work is reading technical newsletters and blogs to better contextualize my work and think more about how I can help my customers stay on the cutting edge of the market. Some of my work is thinking deeply about ways I can improve the functioning of my office, whether through changing communication structures or building automated Excel workbooks to make life easier for the sales people. And some of my work is simply building up better relationships with my coworkers, both locally, nationally, and even globally, because DISCO puts a very strong emphasis on having good quality of relationships with other people. None of this is required of my job: I get to shape the job I want, as long as it is bringing some sort of value to the company at the end of the day.

What does a normal work day look like for you?

I often start in the office, touching base with coworkers, having dialogue with members in our CA office, and discussing allocation of resources for the day. From there, if there is attention needed on site, I will head over to site to start my work. At customer sites, I am usually troubleshooting or installing machines. I have also been doing some training for our customers. A big part of my job, though, is building relationship with customers – whether with the on the floor technicians or the tool managers – and trying to identify what they can do to make their machines run better, and also improve their processes as they grow and evolve in this very fast paced industry. If no attention is needed at the customer sites, I have a litany of side passion projects I am working on that I can spend some hours getting through. Some of these are to help my office, some of these are items I work on for other offices, which I really enjoy because it helps me keep in touch in what is happening in our other offices across the country.

What is DISCO Hi-Tec America, Inc.'s work environment like?

Like any company, this can fluctuate. Sometimes work can be stressful. Perhaps there is a particularly vexing problem that I'm struggling to solve, and I can feel the eyes of the customer narrowing each passing day (which makes solving these issues even more satisfying in the long run!). But overall the company truly tries to live by the motto "Always the best, always fun." We are encouraged to build relationships with our coworkers, and so our office environment is jovial and cooperative. We have a very interesting mix of culture in our environment as well: we have many members visiting to help our customers who come from Japan, Korea, Singapore, etc. One member from Singapore in particular I hit it off with very well, and we chat on social media almost daily even though he flew back to Singapore almost a year ago! I believe DISCO truly hires people that fit the culture very well and are interesting, upstanding people, and this really helps to foster a fun and friendly work environment.

How do you collaborate with other departments/teams?

Collaboration is available in many forms if you want to seek that out. The team in North Carolina has been creating some very impressive technical solutions for their customers, and so I've been starting dialogues with them to learn about what they've done, and also the office culture they've created has helped them stand out as technical experts. I sit on a few committees - and started some as well! - that allow me to collaborate on issues to help DISCO America to continue pushing ourselves to reach new heights. I have built relationships with some members in our CA office who are also new parents, and we share baby photos and chat about parent life. I know I can always turn to any of them for help on issues I am facing in my daily work because of the investment I have put into our relationships. I have direct lines with certain members for technical help, for operational help, for mentoring. If you have interest in collaborating with people across the world, DISCO has plenty of opportunity for you...just find your interests and pursue them!
